Go Read This!: Shadowland

Behold ,the Marvel Universe's greatest villain...Matt Murdock?
Starting directly after the "Siege" and "Heroic Age" events, this story takes a far darker turn. Dardedevil has killed the current leader of The Hand (a ninja death cult) and assumed control of the group. Then its business as usual, ya know, build a temple, rumors of missing people, killing...wait, im not going to ruin it.
This story is a compelling and disturbing look and what can happen to a "hero".

Quit reading this....go read more comics.

Atari making a comeback? I'd hit that.

Every once in a while my masochistic tendencies gets the better of me so I visit CNN.com and subject myself to all the atrocities of our fellow human beings. Today, I was pleasantly surprised to find (among the articles of war, nuclear threats, serial killings and horse manure politics) an article about Atari coming back into the gaming scene.

Back.

Atari says they are "returning to their roots" and will "adapt to the era of mobile and social gaming". It seems that they are working on only developing games rather than their own gaming console system. If this is the case, I believe this is truly a smart move as Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony have a kung-fu-grip hold on the gaming market and releasing another console would be a huge risk.

No room for Atari whatsoever.

However, releasing their classic games on mobile devices is pure gold. Who wouldn't want Asteroids as their toilet-time-waster while sitting on the pot? For your convenience, here is the link to the article: Atari comeback

Half Price Books

When I have some spare time and a few extra dollars, I enjoy driving over to my nearest Half Price Books to pick up some decently-priced reading material that could be anything from computer hardware/software books to comic books (obviously). The deals you find are great at times but I do have a bone to pick with the pricing on their comics. Now, keep in mind that I have nothing against Half Price Books and I do enjoy shopping there, but the only HPB location with the best deals on comics is the Kenwood location in Cincinnati. At 25 cents you can't beat that with Daredevil's billy club. No matter how angry he is. However, every other location in the Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati area don't really follow the 'Half Price' logic. And I'm talking about also seeing the exact same issues priced differently from one store to another. Drastically different.

The only difference between buying this at HPB now and hot-off-the-shelves in 2009 is nothing.

There is nothing 'Half Price' about a 21 year old comic in so-so condition that costs 100% of the original price when it was first put on shelves when I was 7. Furthermore, there is nothing 'Half Price' about a comic in so-so condition that costs 400% of the original price either.

While searching for the logic being used , I found the answers here.
Unfortunately, this doesn't change my shopping there. They still have the best prices around and I'll continue to go there regularly. But I did write HPB over two months ago asking why I see things like an issue of Detective Comics for 25 cents at their Kenwood location and the same issue going for $4.00 at the Colerain store. I never got a response. So I went to their site and looked for their pricing policy and found this:

"COMIC BOOKS are half price unless otherwise marked with our sticker."

Doesn't really answer my question, but I also saw this:

"The vast majority of the books and other items we sell are priced at half the current list price or less—but a few are not:

  • Specially priced promotional items (These are books, budget audio, and other items produced specifically for the value-conscious consumer and priced by the publisher. Therefore these items may not be half price.)
  • Collectibles and out-of-print materials."

I can see them trying to make a good profit on the first appearance of Superman in Action Comics, but "Collectibles and out-of-print materials" simply cannot apply to any 'Ultimate' issues of Marvel Comics that are only a few years old and not necessarily considered "collectibles" just yet. Come on, now.

The Omega Effect Revealed!

Today several covers for Marvels next event "The Omega Effect" were revealed all 3 of which solidify the key players as Spiderman,Daredevil and The Punisher.  Greg Rucka and Mark Waid have also revealed the main premise of this even is Daredevils aquisistion of a harddrive containing unknown info that makes him the most hunted man in the world.
Rucka said, "Daredevil has this device, and the problem is that these five organizations don't want anyone else to have it. Eventually they'll run out of patience and say, 'Well, you know, what we really need to do is just kill Daredevil and then we can get back to killing each other.' Once Frank finds out about the drive and finds out what's on it, he says, 'Give that to me.' Daredevil only temporarily holds the title of 'most dangerous man alive.' Normally that title goes to Frank Castle. Frank's feeling is 'I can keep it safe, and I can use it properly.' Which of course, Matt hears as 'I can keep it safe, and I can use it to kill lots of people.' So one sees the conflict immediately, I think, between these two gentlemen."
Spiderman's involvment is due to an order from Reed Richards to retreive the drive.
Included are the covers of
Avenging Spiderman #6
Daredevil #11
The Punisher #10

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix Soundtrack

I have been a long-time Street Fighter fanatic ever since I played Street Fighter II for the first time at arcades in Chicago. Sure, there were other fighting games that I enjoyed but none was as unique and diverse as SF. The characters, their stories, the stages, the fighting styles and moves; all were very well thought-out with each fighter having fighting moves that differed from the other. This made the game loads of fun because everyone has a different strategy when it comes to fighting games so one could most definitely find a fighter that suited their style.

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix was release on the Xbox Live market in November 2008. The game was a complete overhaul as far as graphics are concerned but stayed faithful to the original sprites. It received much praise from critics and gaming magazines and scored high points all across the board.

I came across a site that talked about the soundtrack for Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix arranged by OverClocked Remix. OC Remix is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to "preserving and paying tribute" to video game music. Directed by djptretzel and Shael Riley, this new arrangement of the original music delivers some killer beats, edgy guitar and some dirty synths. I even have an ipod playlist called 'Street Fighter Workout' that has a few of the songs that I listen to at the gym. Listening to Ryu's, Ken's and (especially) Guile's themes gets you pumped enough that you'll want to deliver a Dragon Punch to the next arrogant meathead that walks in front of you while you're doing dumbell curls.

For each fighter's theme, they included the normal song as well the 'Heavy Damage' version where the tempo is sped up. You also have the ending music for each character as well as the menu music from other screens of the game.

I'd suggest to any faithful Street Fighter fan or overall gamer to visit www.ocremix.org and check out their stuff.

Mark Waid speaks on "The Omega Effect"

Today Marvel writer and helmsman of the House of Ides "Next Big Thing" tweeted the following earlier

"Daredevil has made peace with never being able to change Frank, but maybe there's some hope for redemption elsewhere." - @MarkWaid"

The Omega Affect??

Today marvel posted the image "theomegaaffect.jpg" as a teaser of their "next big thing". What does this image mean? At a first glance it would appear a story involving Daredevil,Punisher, and Spiderman. But would Marvel be that obvious?
Cryptic messages have become the new language of the internet and alot smarter ad campaigns than "wheres the beef?".
So what could this mean? An obvious return of Omega the Unknown? Is Frank Castle a new Daredevil? Or perhaps Carnage?(notice the web background is more Carnage's color pallette as opposed to spideys) and who ripped (or sliced) the Daredevil cowl.....Keep checking TheNakedBear for details.

The Man of Steel

Henry Cavill is absolutely jacked (pun-tastic, and you'll see why, keep reading) in the newest Superman movie called The Man of Steel. It's scheduled for a June 14, 2013 release and also stars some big names such as Amy Adams, Russell Crowe, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, Laurence Fishburne and Christopher Meloni. This film is suppose to delve into Clark's feeling of alienation (another pun!) because of his powers and coming to the realization that he must don the cape to do one thing and one thing only: kick some serious ass. Much like Christian Bale looked like he was the first Batman to actually hit the weight room, Henry Cavill obviously took this part seriously to make everyone believe that his Superman can really stop bullets with his ludicrous abs.

Correction: The Man is Steel

However, as much as Cavill's physical transformation impresses the hell out of me, only one man, in my opinion, truly conveyed the determination, strength, toughness, solidity, and overall goodness of the Clark Kent/Superman character. The man himself...

Pictured: Truth, justice and the American way

I know, I know. The old films started to blow after the first one (actually they started to blow at the end of the first one with Superman's amnesia kiss), but Christopher Reeve himself was fantastic. This man didn't care if the films began to get worse. Now, I'm taking a guess here, but I'm pretty sure he looked everyone dead in the eye and said "Sure, I'll be in a film comprised of horrible ideas, but guess what? My Superman is going to rock. Hard. BAM!"

And though he was an outstanding Superman, he was an even better Clark Kent and that's what's important. You liked the guy, and you felt sorry for his clumsiness, but when he needed to shed his nerd threads, that's all she wrote.

This post is in no way a slight to Cavill, but it is simply to honor Christopher Reeve as the big red cape is now passed on to someone else. I'm very much looking forward to The Man of Steel.

And now, about that pun...

It looks like Wolverine himself is Superman's stunt double

In Nolan we trust.

Bane,Catwoman,The Holiday Killer,Ra's Al Ghul,Wheres Waldo...
All of these are names associated with the new Batman film, "The Dark Knight Rises". But only one name matters, Christopher Nolan. Perhaps the greatest addition to Batman mythos since the Demons Head himself,Nolan has been both the target of praise and vitrol from comic book fans around the globe.
"Who the hell is Christian bale?"
GOOD CALL NOLAN
"Why the hell is Heath Ledger playing the joker?"
GOOD CALL NOLAN
"Who the hell put catwoman in this?"
GOOD CALL...wait...
Are we being set up for huge reveal? What purpose will catwoman serve? Is she an agent for Al Ghul?
Out of all the additions to Nolans Bat-verse i find this one the most bizzare...what the hells the point.
I dont need to see Bruce tap that.
I dont want Bruce to tap that.
I dont want Bruce.
I want Batman.
With this being the close to a trilogy they have a lot of big shoes to fill. Stories to close, characters to kill off. So where in this does Catwoman fit. Bane is a terrorist, a cold calculating monster with no remorse or concern for human life (read Detective Comics #666). So whats Catwoman? Eye candy?
Tim "goth kid" Burton used the character more as a catalyst to show how evil a corporation could be and how one horndog CEO throwing his secretary out a window isnt a great thing...F*ck you Tim Burton.
As much as i want to hate the idea of catwoman I have yet to be dissapointed by anything in Nolans Bat-verse. So if you dont know if "The new Batman movie" is gonna be any good, remember
In Nolan We Trust

Black Butler

There are some anime shows that I really try to get into. And I mean really try. When a show gets so much hype and praise, I think to myself "It just has to be good. There's no way it could be bad when it's this popular". Many times, however, when that thought fails me and sometimes I'm so let down and so uninterested in a show that I think that maybe there is something wrong with me. I am very critical when it comes to anime, though. It first peaked my interest in high school when Mike introduced me to Dragon Ball Z. Damn, that show was good. It was good because of the unique cast of characters, the great voice acting and the story as well as the concepts that went along with it. Though it became repetitive over time and I haven't followed it as I once did, I new that it was a new form of entertainment that I enjoyed quite a bit. Since then I have considered myself an anime fan even though there are just a few that I really do enjoy.

My latest love interest: Black Butler.

Don't let the coattails fool you. The Joker is also an evil bastard and his are purple.

Black Butler is set in London in the Victorian era. The main character is Ciel Phantomhive, a twelve-year-old who is head of the family and runs the Funtom company (and surprisingly mature for a prepubescent child) . Sebastian Michaelis is his butler; a demon who has vowed to serve Ciel and help him avenge the death of his parents for the small price of devouring his soul when the task is complete. That relationship is intriguing to watch as they have there adventures that usually involve other supernatural beings.

I have always been one for Gothic themes and this show satisfies that for me. The voice acting done by J. Michael Tatum for Sebastian is just superb and every episode I watched left me a little angrier than the last because I knew I was closer to the end of season 1. Unfortunately only the first season has been released here in North America. On a positive note, though, you can currently check it out on Netflix instant streaming.

Happy New Year!

Hello to all! The Naked Bear sincerely hopes that all of you had a very fun, very safe and very happy new year. It's the beginning of January so that means that many of us have upset the balance of the universe by changing our routines to fit our new year's resolutions. Gyms and fitness centers are most likely making a killing on memberships and fast food joints just may be seeing a slight decline (or some kind of change, but who knows) in sales, only for the perfect balance to once again resume by February-March-ish; putting everything and everyone back in perfect harmony. What can we say? We are creatures of habit and routine and many of us don't like change.

But anywho, we hope that whatever resolutions you have made, you'll stick to it; and that your holidays brought  you many good times. I feel boring as I have nothing to report as far as news that anyone reading this may be interested in. Aside from the good times had with loved ones, the most excited thing that happened to me within the last month is taking advantage of the 20% off sale that Half Price Books had going on from Dec 26-30. You can bet your sweet asses I snatched up all the comics I could hold in my short little arms. And in other related geek news, I also now have a new mistress in my household. She's white, she's short, nice knobs, a flat ass and I love to push her buttons. Yep, I have a Nintendo Wii to keep my other console hunnies company. Though many people I know didn't quite get into the Wii, I've always loved it and snatched up some good deals. I'm very excited to once again own a game system that supports new Zelda games. Bam!

I was going to keep this short so I'll go ahead and wrap it up here. Mike and I will be bringing more of our recordings as time allows. You'd be surprised how difficult it is to get together to record when both work and nine miles distance are factored in.Well, here's to 2011. Not a bad year at all, but hopefully 2012 brings good change.

Adios for now.
Danny
